Phoenix’s first independent, outpatient-only, dedicated epilepsy practice is opening this August. Skip the drive, skip the wait — reserve your place today for board-certified, subspecialty seizure care built around you. Limited waitlist spots available.
At Sonoran Epilepsy Center, we believe every patient deserves access to board-certified, subspecialty-level epilepsy care — without traveling across the state to receive it.
Our practice is built around a simple conviction: accurate diagnosis, thoughtful medication management, and genuine patient education transform lives. We combine the clinical depth of an academic epilepsy program with the warmth and accessibility of a community practice.
Rooted in the Sonoran Desert and proud to serve Arizona, we are building the epilepsy specialty home the Valley deserves.
Dr. Gina Hopkins-Calligan is a board-certified neurologist and epileptologist with a deep commitment to delivering expert, compassionate seizure care to the communities of Arizona. She founded Sonoran Epilepsy Center to fill a critical gap in subspecialty neurology access across the Valley.
Dr. Hopkins-Calligan earned her medical degree in 2012 from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine before going on to complete a neurology residency in 2016 and epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology fellowship in 2018, both at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center/Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Before launching Sonoran Epilepsy Center, Dr. Hopkins-Calligan spent six years at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, where she provided comprehensive neurological care to veterans—an experience that sharpened her clinical expertise and deepened her dedication to patient-centered medicine.
Her clinical focus encompasses the full spectrum of epilepsy care: from first-seizure evaluations and EEG interpretation to complex medical management and coordination with surgical teams for refractory cases. Dr. Hopkins-Calligan has a particular interest in caring for women with epilepsy and related conditions. She is passionate about empowering patients and families with the knowledge and tools to live fully with epilepsy.
Outside of medicine, she enjoys running and spending time with her husband and children in Phoenix.
From first seizure evaluation to long-term management, our team provides the full spectrum of epilepsy care under one roof.
Comprehensive first-seizure workups and diagnostic assessments for patients experiencing possible epileptic events.
Routine and ambulatory (at-home) EEG studies to capture and characterize seizure activity and guide treatment decisions.
Evidence-based anti-seizure medication selection, titration, and monitoring — optimized for each patient’s seizure type and lifestyle.
Seizure first-aid training, driving and safety counseling, and SUDEP awareness education for patients and their support networks.
Convenient virtual appointments for follow-up care, medication reviews, and ongoing management — available for eligible patients statewide.
Seamless coordination with epilepsy monitoring units (EMU), neurosurgery, neuropsychology, and other specialists when advanced evaluation or surgical workup is needed.
We are actively seeking a Neurology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join Sonoran Epilepsy Center as a founding clinical team member. This is a rare opportunity to help build a subspecialty practice from the ground up — with meaningful autonomy and direct impact on patient outcomes.
